Cantabrigia - the Cambridge blog

Hello!

Welcome to the very first edition of the monthly Greenward newsletter! We're pleased to announce the opening of our eco-goods shop--Greenward--on April 19. Greenward is located in Cambridge, MA near the Porter Square T stop. Check out this page for directions and a map.

Greenward is all about helping you to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. We carry gifts, stationery, housewares, things for babies and kids, jewelry, handbags, books, and magazines. Everything we stock is eco-friendly and helps to move things "greenward."  Every one of our products is at least one of the following:

· recycled, reclaimed, reusable, or recyclable
· made from organic materials
· handmade
· made from sustainable materials
· energy efficient
· biodegradable
· educational

Of course, we love modern, well-designed items. So, going green at Greenward doesn't mean having to sacrifice style!

In our monthly newsletter we'll focus on a few of our favorite items, so without further ado. . .

Spotlight on...Josh Jakus
 gward logo

Josh Jakus is a Berkeley, California-based designer dedicated to making experiential connections between form and function. We're thrilled to carry Josh's Eggflats and UM bags (pictured here). UM handbags are architectural in style and create a dramatic statement. Best of all, they fold flat for easy travel. Eggflats are a sculptural tabletop piece that also fold flat for storage and then unfurls to hold coins, keys, fruit, and other small treasures.
UMs  and Eggflats come in one quitessential color: gray.  That's because they're sewn from two layers of industrial wool felt made from factory excess that would otherwise be thrown away.

Spotlight on...Bambu

bambuJust in time for some serious spring entertaining, we have lots of Bambu utentils, bowls, and trays. Made from bamboo, these housewares are the perfect compliment to any table setting.

Bamboo is not just great looking--it's an excellent sustainable material.  Here's some information from Bambu:
"Bamboo plays an important role in the reduction of timber consumption, environmental and forest protection, poverty alleviation, and sustainable development of rural economies. It is the fastest growing canopy for the re-greening of degraded lands and releases 35% more oxygen than equivalent timber stands. Bamboo is a highly renewable material. It is one of the earth's fastest growing plants. Bamboo needs no replanting, grows without fertilizers or pesticides and is harvested from controlled stands with an astounding growth cycle of three to five years. Bamboo offers vital economic and ecological benefits to the lives of millions of people worldwide; providing food, fuel, housing, furniture, artisan products, and soil and water conservation."

Here at Greenward, we love bamboo so much that we used it as building material for some of our store display fixtures!

Spotight on...BtheNV

bthenvBtheNV (Get it? Be the envy!) is the brainchild of two sisters. They reclaim magazines to create stunning jewelry that always causes a stir. Greenward is proud to carry an extensive collection of earrings that are gorgeous and light-weight. Each pair is one-of-a-kind.
