Greenward's September Favorites

Take Back the Tap
Did you know that 40% of bottled water is tap water?  Or that bottled water uses 2.7 million tons of plastic worldwide every year?  If you live in the Boston area, you are likely getting your tap water from the MWRA's Quabbin reservoir, some of the best tap water in the US.  Read this report from Food and Water Watch to learn more about the environmental costs of bottled water.

Cambridge Local First
Shopping at locally-owned businesses is a great way to support a vibrant local economy.  Since 2005, Cambridge Local First has worked to raise the profile of locally-owned businesses in Cambridge.  Look for their 2008 Directory in October!
Hello!

Welcome to the September edition of the monthly Greenward newsletter.  We have much news to share!

First of all, we're pleased to announce our new expanded hours:
Monday - Wednesday: 11am - 6pm
Thursday: 11am - 8pm
Friday - Saturday: 11am - 6pm
Sunday: 12pm - 5pm

In August, we attended the our first ever NYC International Gift Fair. The NYIGF is a venue for hundreds of vendors to show off their wares to retailers from across the nation. We were a bit worried that we would have a hard time finding the sort of attractive eco-friendly items that everyone (hopefully!) has come to expect from Greenward. We're pleased to report that we discovered many great eco finds that will be making their way into the shop over the next few months.

Greenward has been lucky to have several recent media mentions:
  • We were selected by Stuff@Night for their Hot 100 under the category of "Hot Eco-Chic".
  • We were also mentioned in Stuff@Night within a feature on Boris Bally's great Pentatrays made from street signs.
  • Check out this week's Weekly Dig for their eco-conscious issue--"Greenify Your Situation." The issue covers eco-friendly finds around town, including the Lite2Go by Knoend now in our shop.  We also carry several of the other items featured.
  • Lastly, check us out on the awesome Not For Tourists website. We love this site--it features loads of shops, theaters, clubs, and resturants in a variety of cities.
Check out our Press Page for more information.

See this month's link to the "Take Back the Tap" report to see all the reasons you shouldn't buying bottled water.  See our selection of Sigg Bottles to see what you should be carrying your water in!  Sigg bottles, Swiss made since 1908, are made of aluminum with a water-based, non-toxic resin coating on the inside.  They don't leach any chemicals and don't alter the flavor of beverages.  They are extremely durable, lightweight, recyclable, and look great!  We have many designs, sizes, and accessories, so buy one and hydrate in style.
Spotlight on...Kitchen Composter

 BokashiKitchen Composter
The Happy Farmer Kitchen Composter is the urban composting solution extraordinaire.  The Kitchen Composter is made of 75% post-consumer recycled plastic.  It has an airtight lid to keep odors inside and and integrated strainer and spigot to drain off liquids.  The Kitchen Composter uses microbial Bokashi to pickle and ferment food scraps (including meat, bones, and dairy!) in less than half the time of conventional composting methods.  The Bokashi "tea" can even be used as a plant fertilizer or to keep your drains clean!
Thanks for reading our newsletter. We'll see you in the shop!

Sincerely,
Scott & Simone
